It’s simple, fresh and simply feels like coming home after a hard day.

Are you feeling hungry yet? Get ready, because we’re about to visit Greece and explore what truly defines Mediterranean Greek food. Let’s see the best Greek dishes to try.

What Makes Greek Food Mediterranean?

Greek olive oil is probably the best I ever had.

And now for the ultimate question! What really makes food taste Mediterranean? And what really connects Greek food to the heart of Mediterranean cuisine?

First of all, geography. But, even bigger than that is a way of eating and living that celebrates simplicity, freshness, and deep cultural roots.

Traditional Greek ingredients are what really make the flavours feel so alive. And so good for you! I’m talking about olive oil. It’s so good, I think it’s the best I ever had. Then, fresh vegetables, seasonal herbs, grains, and seafood straight from the Aegean.

And what goes great with all that are some juicy tomatoes, wild greens, olives, lemons, garlic, oregano… And so much more.

There is one thing you need to keep in mind. If you want to eat Greek Mediterranean style, eat good but never alone. The food is shared around the table. This is what truly makes food feel Mediterranean.

This is why Greek food is considered a pillar of the Mediterranean diet. It blends nourishment with joy, and health with tradition.

1. Moussaka

This is Greek comfort food at its finest.

We’re starting strong! This is Greek comfort food at its finest. Have you ever tried lasagna? Well, this is the Greek answer to that dish. But somehow, they’ve managed to make it even richer, cozier… And not to offend anyone, but more delicious.

This is how you make it. All you need are slices of fried eggplant, layered with warm ground meat. Tuck it under a thick blanket of creamy béchamel sauce. And voila!

If you’re a fan of bold, layered dishes you absolutely have to try this one out!

2. Souvlaki

A classic Greek dish. So simple but so irresistable.

I present to you one of the most popular Greek meals. It’s so simple but so irresistible.

I just love talking about this Greek dish, because to be honest, it’s my favorite. So, what do we have here?

Marinated pork, chicken, or lamb. You choose your poison. Grill it on skewes and serve it with pita, salad, and tzatziki. So, there you have it. Combination of all the best of best!

Once you try it, you’ll see how easy it is to fall in love.

3. Tzatziki

Tzatziki is everywhere in Greece.

You’ve seen it somewhere, I’m sure. It’s everywhere in Greece. And it’s that way for a reason. The absolute must-have if you’re trying to live Mediterranean life and eat Mediterranean.

Finally, you’ll know what it is in tzatziki once and for all. It’s a creamy yogurt dip with cucumber, garlic, olive oil, and dill.

It’s so yummy and refreshing that practically goes with everything. If I were you I would start with paring it with some grilled meats, bread, or veggies. Thank me later!

4. Dolmades

Greek food that wraps so much love in only one bite.

Let me tell you, you’ll be surprised how much love can fit inside a single bite. This is what trying Dolmades feels like.

It really blew me away; the amount of effort and love someone puts into making a delicious dish.

These little grape leaf parcels are stuffed with herby rice (sometimes a bit of meat too), rolled by hand—often by a grandmother who’s been doing it for decades—and then simmered until tender.

Earthy, tangy, and packed with tradition, dolmades are the kind of simple, soulful Mediterranean meze that make you slow down and savor.

5. Greek Salad (Horiatiki)

Greek salad tastes like summer.

You think you know what summer feels like? I thought I did as well, but when I tried Horiatiki for the first time, I realized I didn’t have a clue.

It’s pure perfection. I’m talking about thick-cut tomatoes still warm from the sun, crunchy cucumbers, slivers of red onion, olives, and a giant slab of creamy feta perched right on top. Disclaimer: never crumbled, always bold!

The whole thing gets a generous drizzle of golden olive oil and a sprinkle of oregano that smells like the hillside it came from. I have to share a quick story. I remember ordering one in a seaside village where the waiter brought it out with a wink and said, “This is the only salad we do right.”

And honestly? He was right.

6. Baklava

Flaky phyllo pastry, crushed nuts, and honey fall madly in love.

Craving something sweet? Don’t worry, Greeks have that covered, as well.

No list of Greek desserts is complete without baklava. I have to warn you, it’s really sweet. Even though it looks so good you think you will not be able to stop, I’m telling you – just having one satisfies all your cravings.

So, what is Baklava? It’s what happens when flaky phyllo pastry, crushed nuts, and honey fall madly in love. Yes, sounds juicy, but so does baklava.

The golden slice is crispy on the outside, but nice and tender in the middle.

While you’re eating it, you’ll keep wondering if you’re having a dessert or a piece of history. Honestly, both feel true!

7. Feta Baked With Herbs & Olive Oil – The Ultimate Meze

Feta is not only for salads!

First of all let’s solve this riddle once and for all. You’re probably wondering what in the world is Meze?

Meze is something that was invented by the Mediterranean gods! I’m just kidding, but it sure feels like it. It’s something that you can eat when you’re not hungry just to snack on something. Or, if you’re starving. But be careful, you’ll not be able to stop.

Feta doesn’t only belong on salads. Wait until you try it warm, soft and bubbling under a drizzle of olive oil and a scatter of herbs. Once you try baked feta, you’ll keep asking yourself why have you ever eaten it cold.

Oregano, thyme, maybe a pinch of chili flakes—it’s simple, but when it hits the oven, something magical happens. The edges brown just slightly, the center turns creamy, and suddenly it’s not just cheese—it’s the ultimate meze.
